Cupping – More Than Just Polka Dots!

(Though we do love polka dots…)

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping is an ancient form of alternative medicine that originated in China and has been practiced for thousands of years. It gained widespread attention after the 2016 Olympics, when Michael Phelps was seen with the familiar purple circles often left behind by cupping therapy.

So what are those marks—and what does cupping actually do?

How Does Cupping Work?

Cupping is a type of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that uses glass, silicone, or plastic cups to create negative pressure on the skin and underlying tissues. Think of it like gentle suction or a vacuum effect.

Traditional massage techniques are compressive (hands pushing into muscles), while cupping is decompressive. The suction lifts layers of tissue and draws blood to the surface, which may:

  • Improve blood flow

  • Stretch and mobilize fascia

  • Enhance tissue mobility

  • Support the body’s natural healing process

Are the Purple Marks Bruises?

Nope! The marks left by cupping are not bruises and are typically not painful. They’re simply evidence that blood has been drawn to the surface of the skin. This response is thought to help clear potential restrictions and prepare the tissues for healing.

The marks fade over time and vary in color and intensity depending on the individual and the area treated.

Why Use Cupping in Physical Therapy?

When combined with strengthening and stretching, cupping therapy can:

  • Improve recovery

  • Increase flexibility

  • Reduce muscle tension

  • Support overall movement quality

It’s often used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan—not a standalone fix, but a helpful tool.
