Next Steps

Girl Fit Physical Therapy offers pregnancy and postpartum physical therapy services to support you through this important transition. If you are pregnant or recently had a baby and would like guidance navigating the changes in your body, we are here to help.

What is Postpartum Physical Therapy?

Postpartum physical therapy focuses on supporting women after childbirth. The postpartum body experiences significant changes in posture, skeletal alignment, muscle function, and hormone levels—all of which can affect movement, strength, and comfort. Because of these unique demands, postpartum recovery requires specialized, thoughtful care.

At Girl Fit Physical Therapy, we help new moms safely rebuild strength, reduce pain, and regain confidence in their bodies as they return to daily activities and exercise.

Reconnecting to Your Core

During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles lengthen and the rib cage widens to make space for the growing baby. After delivery, these changes can make it difficult to engage the core muscles effectively. This lack of abdominal strength can contribute to back pain, difficulty lifting or carrying your baby, and challenges returning to exercise.

Learning how to properly reconnect to your core is a critical first step in postpartum recovery—and one that should not be skipped. Your physical therapist will teach you how to coordinate abdominal muscle activation with breathing to safely manage internal pressure. Once this foundation is established, all future strengthening exercises become more effective and safer for your body.

Pelvic Floor Considerations

The pelvic floor muscles sit at the base of the pelvis, like the bottom of a bowl. They support the pelvic organs, assist with bladder and bowel control, and work together with the core and hip muscles to stabilize the pelvis and lower back.

During pregnancy and delivery, these muscles experience increased stress and may be weakened or injured. Retraining the pelvic floor in the postpartum period is essential to restore proper function and support long-term recovery.

Please note: At this time, Girl Fit Physical Therapy does not offer pelvic health services that include internal vaginal assessments or treatment. If internal pelvic floor physical therapy has been recommended for you, we are happy to provide a list of trusted referral providers.
